Pitigliano, one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, has a charming historic center that can be visited in a couple of hours. However, to fully enjoy its alleys and relaxed atmosphere, it is advisable to spend a few more hours.
Historic Centre
Pitigliano's historic center unfolds along three main streets: via Roma, via Zuccarelli, and via Vignoli. Strolling through these alleys means immersing yourself in a timeless atmosphere, among old buildings, small squares, and picturesque views.
The Medicean Aqueduct
Upon arriving in Pitigliano, you will notice the remains of the Medicean Aqueduct, a 16th-century structure composed of 15 arches, the first two of which are of significant size. The aqueduct, completed in 1639, served to bring water to the village from the Lente, Meleta, and Prochio rivers. It integrates perfectly with the village's architecture thanks to its tuff stone covering.
The Fountain of the Seven Spouts and Twin Fountains
The Medicean Aqueduct ends in Piazza della Repubblica, where you will find the Fountain of the Seven Spouts, built in 1545 and directly connected to the aqueduct. In Piazza della Repubblica, you will also find the twin fountains, constructed in the early 20th century.
Orsini Palace
Dominating Piazza della Repubblica, Orsini Palace is one of the oldest buildings in Pitigliano, dating back to the 11th century. Originally a convent, it was transformed into a fortress by the Aldobrandeschi family and later renovated by the Orsini family in the 16th century. Today, it houses the diocesan museum and the archaeological civic museum.
Jewish Quarter and Synagogue
Via Zuccarelli leads to the small Jewish quarter, known as "Little Jerusalem." Here you will find the Synagogue, built at the end of the 17th century, and various historic establishments such as the Kosher wine cellar, the Kosher slaughterhouse, and the Matzo bakery. The quarter testifies to the presence and integration of the Jewish community in the village.
Church of San Rocco
Among the alleys of the village, you will find the Church of San Rocco, a small 16th-century religious building now used mainly as a place of prayer. The church has undergone modifications over the centuries and was closed at the end of the 19th century when part of the building was converted into private residences.
Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul
The Pitigliano Cathedral, located in Piazza San Gregorio, is the main place of worship in the city. First mentioned in the 13th century, the cathedral has undergone numerous renovations and was elevated to cathedral status in the 19th century. Inside, there are numerous works of sacred art.
Strolling through the Alleys
Strolling through Pitigliano means losing yourself in a maze of intertwined streets and alleys, with tall tuff buildings decorated with colorful flags. The village's historic nature offers a glimpse into a time suspended, with dark wooden doors blending with light stone steps and a shy vegetation framing these views.
Little Jerusalem and the City of Tuff
Pitigliano is also known as "Little Jerusalem" due to the historic presence of the Jewish community and "the City of Tuff" for its geological characteristics. The village stands on a tuff promontory, and many buildings are constructed using this material, giving the town a unique and picturesque appearance.
